Katelyn Hernandez

Luna interviews her friend Katelyn. They talked about how she got started with her hobbies, what she loves about these activities, some of her best experiences, and how these hobbies have shaped her life.

Luna Varela: What are some of your favorite hobbies or interests?

Katelyn Hernandez: Well I have a lot of hobbies/interests but some of my favorite ones are traveling, playing/watching soccer, listening to music, reading, drawing, playing video games, dancing and spending time with my family.

LV: Out of those hobbies, pick four and tell me how you got interested in them?

KH: So for traveling I play soccer and we travel to different parts of the world to play against other teams, and I kinda grew up around soccer because I have my brother who is practically my best friend and he’s always played ever since two years of age, plus my dad has always loved watching the Chivas and Mexico play so I guess I just grew up around the sport. For music it honestly brings me so much peace and I can just relate to it. For example I really like Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, Tyler the Creator, MF DOOM, The Smiths, Kanye West, Mac Demarco and Micheal Jackson. Hmm.. reading I guess it’s just relaxing and if I’m bored I always just grab a book from my library in my room and read. And for my family they’ve always been there for me and I seriously don’t know what I would do without them.

LV: Which of these hobbies do you prioritize first?

KH: Well I guess it would have to be soccer because I’m in a team so I have games, practice and I travel for it. So I kinda need to be there for my teammates and stuff.

LV: What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned from pursuing these hobbies?

KH: I think it would have to be getting out of my comfort zone and teamwork because for soccer it takes teamwork for just a simple goal and if I didn’t get out of my comfort zone I probably wouldn’t have been in a good team right now.

LV: What is the best memory you have made while playing soccer?

KH: I’d say it would probably be meeting my teammates and best friends Sage, Jay and Brianna (Katelyn’s best friends) because they are honestly some of the closest people to me. And traveling because I’ve always wanted to travel and I get to do that while pursuing one of my dreams which is honestly amazing.

LV: Okay last question, what are the negatives about your hobbies?

KH: Probably the fact that some people judge me because of it. For example they say things like, “oh you’re not good because you’re a girl” or stuff like “your not fit to play soccer.” But I honestly try to ignore it and just focus on getting better. Another negative is trying to balance school out because I sometimes miss finals due to traveling early on breaks.
