Have you ever heard of Pokemon? Maybe you’ve heard of it from movies, games, and even from a friend. Have you ever wondered what are Pokemons? Or even how did Pokemon start? Pokemon had an interesting history spanning nearly three decades. One fact about Pokemon is that it’s been around for 28 years. Another fact is Pokemon Go was one of the most successful Pokemon games, being downloaded more than 678 million times globally.
What are Pokemons?
According to Bedtime History, an educational and relaxing website with stories for kids and families, “Pokemon are fictional animals with unique abilities and characteristics. The trainers then battle their Pokemon against other trainers to determine who is the strongest.”
According to Portal Pokemon (the official Pokemon website), “Pokemon are classified into 18 types based on their characteristics. Pokemon learn a variety of moves that they can then use in battle. Pokemon grow stronger and level up through battle. Some Pokemon not only level up, but evolve as well.” When Pokemon evolve they become stronger, bigger, and even different.

According to BBC News the game started on February 27 1996, Pocket Monsters was released in a Red and Green version for the Game boy, in Japan.” Game Boys were popular in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Game Boys were a device where you can play lots of video games and looked like a small phone with controller buttons. Game Boys impacted Pokemon because it was the start of the history of Pocket Monsters. Pocket Monsters was the original game before they changed the name of the animals/creatures to Pokemons.

Pikachu was the only monster you could play as at the time. Pikachu was used to fight other Pokemon and bosses. As he thought about the capabilities of the game link cable, his idea for Pokemon grew as he wanted to give modern children the chance to hunt for creatures as he did as a child. The creator also liked to play games and went to a tech school where he learned how to code and his passion for games grew more.
How are Pokemon games now compared to early 2000s?
Pokemon now is very advanced, fun, popular, played world wide, and has generated lots of games, toys, and stores connected to the Pokemon theme. The games now have lots of color compared to the black and white it used to be. Some new game updates are new Pokemon, new battle methods, and being able to play with friends online, However in the early 2000s the game didn’t have the best graphics, and wasn’t popular yet, nor was played worldwide.
Did you know Pokemon can be very inspiring?
Eighth grader Brian Baltazar said Pokemon Go as a kid inspired him to walk and be active because he would try and get the best Pokemon go account with the most shiny and high CP Pokemon.” High CP Pokemon were used to battle and show off how strong your Pokemon is.
My oldest brother also was inspired to collect Pokemon cards from around the world, an example was 2 weeks ago he went to japan and got a lot of Pokemon cards and plushies.
Is Pokemon Go still fun?
In my opinion Pokemon is still a very interesting and an adventurous game but some people cheat so it ruins the fun. My sister said, “Pokemon is very boring because if you’re always indoors you can’t really feel how fun it is to play.” My brother said, “It’s still fun and mysterious because when I was in Japan I found lots of different rare Pokemon that you can’t find in the region, but sometimes it could get really boring after a while of not going outside.” This tells me that Pokemon Go is both fun and could get boring after a while.
