With the end of the year approaching, eighth grade students wanted to know about how culmination works and what the requirements are. So I asked the assistant principal, Wendy Perez, some questions that students had.
Grades
In order to walk the stage students have to have good academics, citizenship, and attendance. Our grading system is 1, 2, 3, 4, different from the usual A, B, C, D, and F. A 4 is mastery of standards, a 3 is approaching mastery of standards, a 2 is developing understanding of standards, and a 1 is no evidence of mastery.
Traditions
Through all the years of the school being open, we’ve created a lot of traditions. For example, we’ve invited a lot of different speakers. Usually, we invite former students who are college graduates and they would come to speak at eighth grade culmination.
Attending culmination
With 150 eighth graders and their families coming to culmination, we need to prioritize space. This situation caused us to give away tickets to give to the people who the students want to come. We usually give 6-8 tickets per student. We do this because we have to add parking to the equation since we need to make sure that there are enough places for the students’ families to park.
Cost of culmination
The cost of renting out a place for culmination is very pricey. The location for the school we use costs about $5,000. Which is why, for now, we are culminating at Animo Legacy. It is too late and too expensive to look for a new location this late into the semester.
