Growing up
Lana Del Rey’s full name is Elizabeth Woolridge Grant. She was born on June 21, 1985 in New York City. She has a younger brother named Charlie Hill-Grant and a sister named Caroline Grant. As a teenager, Lana started to drink a lot. She was Catholic and went to a Catholic school. However, because of her heavy drinking, her parents sent her to a boarding school in Connecticut. Although boarding school didn’t exactly “cure” Lana, she became sober.
After boarding school, she didn’t attend college right away and instead lived with her aunt and uncle. From there, her uncle taught her how to play guitar and that’s when Lana’s passion for music began.
Her rise to fame
Lana started off her career by doing singing gigs with open mic nights and club gigs. In 2006, she recorded a demo album titled “Sirens” and around this time, she signed with the label 5 Points Records, a small independent label based in New York. A few years later into 2010, she released her album “Lana del Rey a.k.a. LIzzy Grant” on 5 Points Records. Later on, Lana broke her contract with 5 Points Records and moved to London.
In London, she worked with a songwriter named Justin Parker. They worked together on many songs including her song “Video Games.” During this time, she began her transformation into her singer name, Lana Del Rey.
Lana’s albums and songs
Songs that have billions of listens are “Summertime Sadness,” “West Coast,” “Born to Die,” and “Young and Beautiful.” Her song “Summertime Sadness” blew up instantly after songwriter Cedric Gervais made a remix out of it. The remix version rose to #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her other song “West Coast” also rose to popularity and became #17 on Billboard Hot 100 in 2014.
Lana is also well known for her collaborations with other singers, including The Weeknd on the songs “Prisoner,” “Stargirl Interlude,” and “The Abyss” on The Weeknd’s newest album. She also worked with Taylor Swift on the song “Snow on the Beach” on Taylor’s album “Midnight.”
Fans around the world
Many people around the world look up to Lana as an inspiration and many others relate to her songs.
My sister, Wendy Ronquillo, who has been a Lana fan since late middle school and early high school, has listened to her songs since 2013. “I first came across her music when I was listening to Pandora [an old music platform]. When I listen to her, it makes me feel tranquilent [sic]. Her music is different because other songs want to make you move and dance while her songs make you feel relaxed and make you think about life and other things.”
