In Student Leadership they prepare festivals and incentives for students to enjoy. They use advisory and empowered reading time to make decorations, posters, and plan the incentives.
There are a lot of students and teachers who put in work to make the incentives fun and exciting. We wanted to know what students in leadership experience. How do they feel about creating posters and planning events? Also how do teachers feel about having big expectations to make something that is fun and enjoyable?
Student Council advisor Ms. Alamilla said, “So before, Student Council was also much smaller, like we would only have 15 students max. We would still do events but because we were a smaller group we were responsible for less. But now Student Council has kind of doubled in size. Also we use the empowered reading time to be like Student Council time, and that’s not how it was before.”
Ms Alamilla explained how Student Council has changed and improved because now that Student Council doubled, they can do more stuff than before, for example reading and doing big events.
Next, we asked students what they thought about being in leadership.
Eighth grader Zaelyn De Leon said, “Preparing for the festival makes me feel excited and stressed because I get to see all the hard work we put into making decorations, but it also makes me feel stressed because we have to plan everything, like make the set up that same day.”
Seeing the festival complete is a relaxing moment for Zaelyn, although she felt they have to set up everything correctly the first time as there is no room for error.
On the other hand, eighth grader Allison Zoquitecatl focused on her experience and the fun that can be found.
“It feels fun working for the festival because I get to set up and see what type of activities we will be doing. Also because we get to show off our drawings we did (the decorations), But we still feel stressed at times because you have to be pretty quick when setting up and working,” Allison said.
