The last week before spring break, students were called out to the office to see if they wanted to join spring break school. Spring break school was open to students from all grades from sixth to eighth.
Students were allowed to have free dress for the entire first week of spring break school. Students checked what advisory they were assigned to. When the bell rang students were expected to arrive at advisory at 8:00. During advisory students would volunteer or be forced to participate in the advisory competitions.
Advisory competitions
- Monday: Basketball relay race (three players needed)
- Tuesday: Soccer penalty (two players needed)
- Wednesday: Balloon race (two players needed)
- Thursday: Rock, paper, scissors (one player needed)
- Friday: Musical chairs (any amount of players)
The winners of these competitions either got chips or donuts and an early lunch.
Eight grader Yamilet Galvan stated, “I hated the advisory competitions because I got forced into rock, paper, scissors and I lost. However, it was still pretty fun and I liked watching the other games because it was so competitive.”
Spring Classes
The classes they had for spring school were advisory, English and, math. The purpose of spring school was to help students excel in math and English. It was to also help students prepare for the SBAC testing that took place from 5/12-16/25. Students began the day with advisory and then had their English and math classes.
During English, students learned new methods for answering multiple choice questions and how to apply them to the SBAC test. On the last day of English class students had to write a three paragraph essay about how social media affects mental health in both positive and negative ways.
For math class students were on Edcite reviewing old units from the past seeing if they remembered how to solve them. On the last day they were tested with difficult math questions to be completed independently.
Eight grader Guadalupe Hernandez stated, “Spring classes made me prepared for what I would see during testing but it was also fun because of the incentives we got such as Knott’s and the zoo.”
Field Trips
- Monday: The zoo
- Tuesday: Knott’s Berry Farm
- Wednesday: Top Golf
- Thursday: Medieval Times
During the field trips students were advised to come in uniform and to stay with their assigned group and chaperone at all times.
Eighth grader Melanie Flores stated, “The field trips we had for spring break school were actually really fun and exciting! I got to go out with some of my friends on them and I got to be out of home. I really had fun at Knott’s Berry Farm because I got to go on many rides and on Ghost Rider for the first time! I also had fun at Top Golf since I really like golf and I got to play with some of the staff members like Mr. Miles and Ms. Crystal. I really think the school should do something like this for future students in the next spring break school!”
