Students wonder what former AJMS math teacher Ms. Tovmasyan is up to now. Well, I got the opportunity to talk to her and answer that question.

I talked with her via Zoom.

Ms. Tovmaysan said her life has changed a lot because she doesn’t have as much free time as when she had to since now she takes care of her kids.

She now works as a math tutor with students from middle school all the way through college level.

She and her husband Javier Alvarado, also a former JMS history teacher, have one child named Michael. She has also stated that she is going to have another baby named Olivia. [Advisor’s note: Olivia was born in April].

Some things she does in her free time are take Michael to the park and push him on the swings. She also plays with him at the park or at the house. Sometimes she would hang out with some teachers from AJMS such as Ms. Bravo, Mr. Aleman, and Mr. Lo, who sometimes hang out at her house.

Here is a transcript of our conversation:

Alan Adame: Hi Ms. Tovmasyan.

Anita Tovmasyan: Hi Alan.

AA: How has your life changed ever since you left Animo Jefferson?

AT: Oh well my life has changed a lot, I don’t have a lot of free time because I’m always with my kids and taking care of them.

AA: When you have that little free time, what do you like to do?

AT: What I like to do with that little time I would have is that I like to hang out with some of the teachers there.

AA: What do you like to do with your kids in your free time?

AT: In my free time, I like to go to the park with them and push them on the swings.

AA: What do you do on a daily basis with your kids?

AT: Hmm… I usually just make breakfast, spend time with them and then later on in the day I tutor kids.

AA: What teachers do you go out with?

AT: I still go out with Mr. Lo, Ms. Bravo, Mr. Aleman and with Mr. Finer sometimes. They would go to my house.

AA: What do you do now for work ever since you left Animo Jefferson?

AT: Actually I don’t really work, but I do tutoring for kids from middle school all the way to college.

AA: What’s the easiest thing you have taught?

AT: The easiest thing I’ve taught is sixth grade because I have done it for a long time.

AA: What is the most difficult thing you have taught in tutoring?

AT: The hardest thing I have taught is college geometry.

AA: What makes you want to teach math and what makes it so interesting?

AT: I love teaching math because I like to see kids’ faces when they finally figure out the math problem. To me math is interesting because there are so many things to learn about it.
