Rosalinda Romero, the mother of eighth grader Sophia Sanchez, started her journey into baking at 12 years old when she lived in Arizona. She says her mom used to go to work so she and her family would come home and do homework and she says “out of nowhere I started baking, you know like biscuits and cakes, cupcakes.” She started off by baking cupcakes and things that were easy to bake. Her favorite things to bake are cakes.
How she turned her hobby into a business
Rosalinda shares that her official business started during the pandemic. Rosalinda said, “Since I’ve always had a hobby of baking, cooking, and doing arts and crafts, I didn’t make it a business until the pandemic came. You know, we couldn’t go to work and there were bills to be paid. So I made my baking, decorating, and crafting into a business during the pandemic. That’s how it came to be my business.”
How she started pricing
Rosalinda started her baking business when everything was cheaper. So now that inflation has gone up since the pandemic, she has to calculate how much she spends on supplies, and how much it costs to make a product. After getting the total, she figures out how much she’ll sell them for.
Advertising
Rosalinda thinks the best way to advertise her product is to let different people try the products so then they can spread the word about how good the product is, which will eventually bring in more people to her business and that’s how she’ll earn her money. She also advertises on social media platforms like Instagram (@rosalinda_creations). Rosalinda also sets up outside of stores so people can see and buy on the spot.
Other businesses
Rosalinda has other businesses as well. She does lots of crafting. Rosalinda has customized cups, mugs, t-shirts, hats, labels, Easter baskets, and graduation leis (also available through her Instagram).
Advice
Rosalinda has some advice for people who want to start their own businesses but are not sure how to. She says, “If they want to go into business, they’ll have to learn and see what they really want to do because I’ve seen it before when people say that they want to start their own businesses and they buy a whole bunch of stuff and they don’t sell it, and they just get stuck there in a cycle of buying product and not selling.”
