Lunch, get it or leave it
Students at Animo Jefferson Charter Middle School decide to either eat or throw away their food.
In Los Angeles Unified School District’s students throw to the trash. At least $100,000 worth of food a day, in one year $18 million dollars, is wasted. In Animo Jefferson, students’ parents fill out an application every year so they won’t have to pay for their lunch, but should they?
Sixth grader Wendy Rosas said, ” I feel that instead people should buy their own food and bring it to school.”
Seventh grader Yadira Renteria said, “I feel bad that many kids throw their food because there are other kids that need food.”
Seventh grader Brittney Bello said, “I don’t get food because I don’t like the food they give at school.” President Obama signed the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act on 2010. This act requires schools to give out healthy foods in order to get money to pay school lunches.
Lunch lady, Andrea Dean said,” I like to ensure all kids are eating healthy. Nutrition is a factor in getting good grades and staying focused while in class. No child on my watch will be hungry if I can help it.”
Parent coordinator, Brenda Serratl’s thinks that there are many kids out there in the world that will appreciate any type of food. Also she said that she gets a feeling of happiness when she sees students wanting to eat the food they give out. ” I feel sad when there are food left over because the food isn’t that bad and students should eat for the good of them,” Brenda said.
Eighth grader, Yuridia Toledo said, “I throw my food because it sometimes taste bad.”
Seventh grader, Veronica Lopez said,”Kids have the fault because why would they get lunch if they aren’t gonna eat it.”
Seventh grader, Isamar Saligan, “I don’t get food sometimes I do because their giving good food. ” She says that the school should give more good food.
Seventh grader Angel Avalos said, “I feel bad about kids throwing their food away when they can give it to another person.”
