The SRLA team helps out little kids
On November 8 Students Run LA (SRLA) runners volunteered at Cal State LA for the organization called Marathon Kids.
Marathon Kids is an organization which encourages elementary kids to be active and fit. The students run their first and last miles in a big event with all the participating schools, and then complete the rest of their marathon by running a mile at a time at their schools throughout the year.
Seventh grade runner, Idiel Torres said, “I was surprised watching those little kids run, at a young age they are thinking of staying active and fit which is really good for them to think that way because it will help them a lot.” He felt happy and proud helping out little kids. “I volunteered because I wanted to elementary school kids to stay fit,” Idiel said.
SRLA coach, Carl Finer really likes volunteering every year and thinks it’s important for the team to give back to the community and be remodels for younger kids. “It makes me happy seeing all the runners enthusiastic and cheering on little kids. Like Kevin Gomez, he looks a little tough but he was really enthusiastic and I got to see how he really was,” Finer said. He said that the mission at this school is that the SRLA team is a family and for the team to expand their horizons which means not just them, but they need to help out others expand also. Help others to have the same experience as them. SRLA does so much for the runners so that’s also a reason why they do this.
The SRLA team got time to talk to was in charge of the finish line, they cheered on the kids while they finished their mile. The volunteers (the SRLA team) received a shirt and wore it to school in order to show that they took their Saturday off to help at Marathon Kids kick off.
