Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world.

Dubai is known as a very luxurious and rich city. It is located in the United Arab Emirates. If you ever find yourself going to Dubai just know that there are very strict and important rules to follow there. The rules/laws are strict because its an Arab nation that follows more traditional, conservative Muslim norms. Many things you might do on your regular days here in the United States may be illegal in Dubai. But because of these rules, Dubai also has one of the lowest crime rates in world.

One rule that they have is that you can’t be seen in public drunk. But non-Muslims can consume alcohol as long as it’s in a licensed venue that is usually attached to a hotel. For example, people can drink in a restaurant or a bar with a hotel. But if seen drunk outside of the venue, you can land in jail. Dubai also has zero tolerance for drinking and driving.

It is offensive to use inappropriate language and rude hand gestures. Swearing in public is prohibited. Saying most bad words is seen as very offensive and is a crime. According to article 373 of the UAE Penal Code, “disgrace the honor or the modesty,” is prohibited.

Another thing that you must know is the dress code. People in Dubai are strict on what clothes to wear. It is recommended to wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. Wearing clothes too tight or too loose is also very strict for both genders. Although the dress code is strict, for tourists they aren’t forced to obey this rule. It would be more a matter of respect to follow these rules.

Even though I’m not able to include all the laws and rules Dubai has, these are pretty much the important ones you would need to know while being there. You can also do more research on what you can or can’t do to ensure you don’t get into trouble in a place you wouldn’t know what to do.
