Almost every year a new mobile device is released for the public to buy. There are many different types of phones and they have changed over the years. Mobile devices have been around since 1973.

What is a mobile device? A mobile device is a handheld device that can do things such as FaceTime, call, record videos, take pictures, and download apps to play games and more. Mobile devices can be very beneficial for emergency situations like calling 911. However, they have many disadvantages such as causing distracted drivers and mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Children can potentially be peer pressured into doing bad things through their mobile devices, such as drugs or school shootings.

The very first mobile device wasn’t able to fit in your pocket because it was 9 inches long and weighed 2.2 kilograms. This is really heavy compared to phones today: the average phone now weighs around only 200 grams. According to support.apple.com an Iphone 14 has a height of 5.81 inches and weighs in at 206 grams, which is around 10 times lighter than a phone back then.

Not only are today’s phones much more smaller but they are also more powerful. Phones earlier were mostly used to make calls. Phones now are used for everything. People even make money off of fixing phones or even buying them then reselling them.

Inside the mobile device

A mobile device might be small but there are many pieces inside. One of the most important pieces inside the mobile device is the battery. The battery is what keeps the mobile device working. When the battery is dead the mobile device isn’t able to be used because the battery is what runs the device.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, “While the battery is discharging and providing an electric current, the anode releases lithium ions to the cathode, generating a flow of electrons from one side to the other. When plugging in the device, the opposite happens: Lithium ions are released by the cathode and received by the anode.” This shows what happens when you charge your phone and when you use it while it’s not on the charger.

Phone prices

Phones are very convenient. However they come with a very hefty price. According to Android Authority, the price of a smartphone increased by $119 on average between 2022 and 2023. That raises the average price to a record-breaking $790.

In conclusion, depending on how a potential user uses it, a mobile phone may be both a benefit and a drawback, including the prices. It is undoubtedly advantageous when utilized sparingly, but it is unquestionably disadvantageous when utilized excessively or for purposes other than those for which it was designed.
