Childhood
Anthony Edwards grew up in Atlanta. When Edwards was three years old he was given the nickname “Ant-Man” from his dad. When he was a child Edwards played football. He played running back, quarterback, and corner back positions. He played football for the Atlanta Vikings and was one of the best Pop Warner running backs in the country by the time he was 10. Edwards started to play basketball because he thought it looked more fun after watching his brothers play. He often played basketball with his brothers at their grandma’s house. Entering freshmen year, he began training with Justin Holland, a former college basketball player and an Atlanta-based basketball trainer.
High school
Because of Edwards success with the Atlanta Xpress 15 under AAU team, Edwards was a four-star recruit in 2016. He began playing high school basketball at Therrell High School as a member of the 2019 class. In January 2017 Edwards went to Holy Spirit Preparatory School and got reclassed to the class of 2020. He decided to move schools so his academic performance could improve. He got reclassed back to the 2019 class after seeing his academics improve. Because of the reclass Anthony Edwards was ranked 1st in his class. At the end of his senior season, he was averaging 29 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists per game. Edwards got All-USA first team, he played in the McDonald’s All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic.
College
On November 5 2019, Anthony Edwards played his first game for the Georgia Bulldogs, making 24 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 steals in a win against Western Carolina. It was a Georgia Bulldogs freshman record, the most since Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Dominique Wilkins freshman performance. He also scored a season high 37 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 blocks in a loss against Michigan State. He was the top scorer on his team, earned second-team All-SEC and SEC Freshman of the Year honors. He got SEC Freshman of the Week. He was also a finalists for the Jerry West Award, which recognizes the top collegiate shooting guard.
NBA
Edwards got drafted 1st overall in the 2020 NBA Draft. On March 18, 2021, Edwards scored a then career-high 42 points, along with 7 rebounds and 3 assists in a game against the Phoenix Suns. He became the third youngest player to score 40 or more points in NBA history. He finished 2nd in rookie-of-the-year voting to LaMelo Ball and was NBA All Rookie First Team.
In his second year in the NBA the Timberwolves made the playoffs but lost in six games against the Memphis Grizzlies. In the 2022-2023 season the Timberwolves made the NBA Play-in Tournament and beat the New Orleans Pelicans. In the first round the Timberwolves lost to the Denver Nuggets and lost in five games.
In the 2023-2024 season the Timber Wolves finished as the 3rd seed in the West and swept the Phoenix Suns and beat the defending champions, the Denver Nuggets, in 7 games. The TimberWolves lost in 5 games against the Dallas Mavericks.
