Don’t judge a boy by his face!
Wonder is about a 10-year-old boy named August Pullman. August (Auggie) was born with a facial deformity and has had many surgeries to make his face look more “normal.” Due to him getting multiple surgeries he had to be homeschooled. After years of being homeschooled, he was finally going into an actual school, entering fifth grade. He starts to make friends and meets new people but also deals with bullying. August starts to learn more about how people act and how people can be treated. All these things that happened to him and the people he meets make big impacts in his life.
I really liked this book because it’s age appropriate and family friendly. It doesn’t necessarily have to be for young kids but can be also for teens or adults. This book also shares the relationship he has with his family, especially his sister Via. She is very protective of Auggie, which I think is really sweet. I’ve never read another book that talks about a kid with this type of problem.
I think this book is very unique. It was written by R.J Palacio. She mainly focuses her books on friendship and kindness. Palacio has written different types of Wonder books that I’m looking forward to reading. She has also written about different unique people. Although Wonder isn’t based on a true story, she was inspired by one of her own children. They were at a store and one of them saw a kid with facial deformity and started to cry. After this she knew she had to write something about it.
Overall I recommend this book because it brings positive messages and shows what other people might go through. It takes the reader on a rollercoaster of emotions. This book also has different perspectives on how people see Auggie. I’m going to be honest: I don’t like to read but this book had me reading all day. If you are looking for an easy and family-friendly book to read, this is the one!
