August the unique kid
“Wonder” the book
Wonder is about a ten year old boy named August that has been home-schooled his whole life until he went to an actual school, but the problem with this is that August has disordered facial features. Even with 27 surgeries, he still didn’t have a normal face. When August was a little boy he loved to wear his space helmet and he would wear it everywhere, but this one time he was in the park and he took off his helmet and many kids either got scared or made fun of him.
Overall I would say that Wonder is a good book because of the obstacles that August went through and how he has changed from those obstacles. Another reason why I like Wonder is because it was very well explained and detailed on what was happening. Reading Wonder is like reading Scorpions because you start to get excited about what’s going to happen next and how they’re going to get through the conflict.
Another reason why I would read this book is because of character development and how August changes from being shy and scared from being around people to being outspoken and brave. Something else that I enjoyed when reading this book is the characters and how they helped August overcome his obstacles and make him feel normal around people.
Overall I would recommend reading this book because of its conflicts, character development, and supporting characters and to see how August goes through a lot of obstacles just so that he could feel more normal around people and so that more people could respect and treat August like a normal person even though he has disordered facial features
Quote from author R. J. Palacio:
“The best way to measure how much you’ve grown isn’t by inches or the number of laps you can now run around the track, or even your grade point average– though those things are important, to be sure. It’s what you’ve done with your time, how you’ve chosen to spend your days, and whom you’ve touched this year. That, to me, is the greatest measure of success.”
