JMS Winner: Joy

Living in a low income community my whole life (and currently) I choose to not be who or what surrounds me.

That brings me joy.

As a young black woman, I am now able to be an owner, vote, and share my voice. Having drug addicts, mentally unstable, and dysfunctional family members makes me want to be the chain breaker.

That brings me joy.

Having God as the center of my life, being more than a conqueror.

That brings me joy.

I know what and whose I am, having a loving and supportive family.

That brings me joy.

I no longer have to be ashamed of my identity. I’m me and I’m proud.

That brings me joy.

People always look down on me, tell me I’ll never be able to follow my dreams.

That brings me joy.

I know that by believing in myself I can do what others say I can’t do.

That brings me joy.
