Selfies, what are they, why do people take them, and why are they so popular?

A seflie is when a person takes a picture of them self when they do not have someone take it for them.

Sixth and eighth grade English teacher, Teresa Vorgias, gave her opinion on selfies. Vorgias said, “I think that if there was no one around you and you wanted to take a picture with something really cool or of a few friends and there is no one around to take the picture, I think in those circumstances, selfies are okay.  However, if you are just taking pictures of yourself making weird faces or posing in different ways all the time, there is an issue at hand.” Vorgias also said that she took selfies back when she went to Europe but not so people can see her outfits but instead to take a picture of herself standing in front of something cool.

A song has been made about selfies. The tittle of this song is simply “#SELFIE” by The Chainsmokers. Throughout the video, pictures or selfies come up and almost every single one of the selfies have different posses. The person taking the selfie is either with a group or by themselves.

Crystal Soto, also an eighth grader said, “I think they became more popular because people started posting pictures on Facebook and everybody started doing it.” Crystal also said, “In a way yes, it did affect teenagers’ life because that’s all us teenagers do when we’re bored, instead of doing homework.”

Monica Ramirez, a student at Dr. Julian Nava Learning Academy said, “I think people shouldn’t be afraid of taking selfies because they don’t hurt. It’s just a picture you will keep forever.”
