Obama makes changes to immigration policy
Obama has created a plan to keep immigrants from coming into the United States by putting more guards on patrol on the border line and how he will control the amount who leave and enter but, some immigrants disagree with this policy.
Obama has announced the changes in immigration policy on November the 19, there are some criteria that must be met determine if an immigrant can stay in the U.S. or be forced to leave. Parts of the criteria are that they must have been in the U.S. since 2010 or have been here for 5 years at least , they need to have a child that is a U.S. citizen, and cannot have a criminal background.
The immigration policy will allow citizens to receive job permits if they meet the criteria. However, even though immigrants will be able to receive job permits, they are not allowed under this program to become a legal resident.
Patsy Flores, mother of two said, “I think that there should be improvements because if immigrants are already receiving job permits why not also give them citizenship.” Flores tells us that if immigrants have been here for a pretty long time then they should become U.S. citizens. Her opinion is based on the fact that her mother is an immigrant.
Sehrish Jamshed, a 6th and 8th grade history teacher said, “I feel that job permits are being used for physical labor to help boost the economy, but if they are residents they can help out more.” Jamshed says that, “If immigrants are going to be searched for a criminal background than it should be for a probable cause because it’s the 4th Amendment, and should have Americans searched as well. Even though they put more guards on the border line, that won’t stop immigrants. If they really want to be in the U.S. then they will find a way in.”
Flores agrees with the fact that immigrants should be checked for criminal backgrounds. She said we need to check if they are a threat to the U.S. and the people who live there.
Jamshed believes that there should be some changes to the immigration policy. She said, “There should be a process that allows immigrants to come in so that they won’t have to be scared and would be able to come in.”
