Death Note is a book to die for!

I first came across this book while in a teacher’s room. It looked interesting so I picked it up and started reading it. While reading it I found I had watched the series. The teacher let me take it home for the summer and I was completely hooked on it. The book was made by Tsugumi Ohba and is 12 volumes long. It was published on October 3, 2006 in the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine that also published many other famous manga like My Hero Academia, One Piece, and even Dragon Ball. I personally think the manga-book is an absolute classic masterpiece that can you read for hours and never get bored of it.

Death Note is a thrilling, above-average mystery book. It centers around Light, an easy- going, intelligent student. His simple life takes a turn for the worst when he finds a book that kills anyone whose name you write in it. In an attempt to rule the world of evil, he becomes the world’s greatest known killer, Kira. He could have probably gotten away with the murders, but L, a famous detective who is trying to catch him, has a brilliant and is able to get close to him. Even when he is killed he is still able to pursue after him with his successors Near and Mello.

The book does a marvelous job letting us look into the mind of the gift detective, L. In the manga-book we get a look inside what goes through his mind and how he simplifies the murders. During an incident with a TV station that Kira supposedly contacted, L looked into what was sent and said. He was able to correctly concluded that Kira didn’t send it and that there was a second Kira. Sometimes what he’s thinking is too complicated that you have to reread it to understand what he figured out. It’s an incredible experience to be able to go through that journey with him and it’s gets you really attached to him.

Death Note’s way of letting us know what the characters are thinking and their personalities is really what got me attached to them. Like Mastuda, an innocent and kind guy who works in the police force. He is one of the few who is working to catch Kira. He has a quirky and very innocent personality that makes him a very lovable character. During an investigation into Light when he was suspected of being Kira, Mastuda and Light were hanging out at a shopping center looking for the second Kira. Matsuda was instructed to keep an eye on Light for anything suspicious. Mastuda thought that there was no way he could be Kira since he was nice to him and even brought some of his friends along to try and get him a girlfriend. This is what makes him so innocent since as it turns out Light is Kira.

Death Note is a lot like another Manga called Tokyo Ghoul. The main characters start off sweet and smart, but then they get an evil-like power. The main character in Tokyo Ghoul is first reluctant to use his power, but then when he does start using it he uses it to get rid of evil. Just like Light, both characters go through a lot of changes and turn cold-hearted. If you enjoyed Tokyo Ghoul I would strongly urge you to read Death Note. If you don’t like reading, but still want to check it out, there is an anime adaptation. It not like one of those anime when they complete change the plot or leave stuff out. It’s actually pretty close to the manga-book and only a few things are changed like the wording. The whole series is on Netflix, and it’s only 37 episodes in one season. I would highly recommend Death Note to anyone who likes a thrilling, mystery, adventure that has a lot of plot twists and shocking moments.
