The Hate U Give is about a young character named Starr Carter who goes through the horrible loss of her best friend Khalil. Seeing him getting shot right in front of her face by a police officer traumatized her.

I enjoyed reading this book because of how well the story is written and because you can place yourself in the shoes of these characters. I also like how the book changes scenes every now and then, which makes the book interesting. I have to say one of my favorite things about this book is how realistic this book can be. It is devastating how our society visualizes African American lives by their skin color and because of that they are targeted as “dangerous” humans.

The whole reason why Khaill got shot was because a white cop thought that he was leaning towards the car to get a gun. However, he was just checking up on his friend Starr to see if she was okay. Just then the cop shot him, leaving Starr shocked that her dead friend was there, slowly falling to the ground with his eyes barely open.

A thing I don’t like about this book is about how repetitive it is having to explain how she feels because of how the people in her life don’t understand, especially her friends and boyfriend. She doesn’t really trust them because she thinks when she does they’ll call her “Poor Starr the charity case that saw her friend die in front of her face” or say things like “That’s what you get for living in the hood.”

But at the end Starr did get justice and had everyone hears her side of the story. She lost a couple of friends along the way because of how racist they were being, coming at her for posting stuff they didn’t really find an interest in but that was still very important to Starr cause of her race and were she came from. She also came out of her shell after being the witness, deciding not to be afraid of how people would see her.

I really did enjoy the book and hope that you get to read the book if you get the chance. It can really help you see from a different perspective from people that are different from you and the struggles they go through. I also think it’s a great book if you’re reading young adult novel fiction.
