Elvia Nebo works in the main office at AJMS and has been working here for 15 years. She enjoys her job because she likes working with the kids. One of the people she looked up to during her journey was her mom. She did not have any struggles during her journey to get to this point. Ms.Elvia said if she had one thing to say to her past self it would be not to waste time. A motivational speech that she said was to keep going and don’t give up on yourself.

TRANSCRIPT:

Brandon Miles: So, what is your name and how long have you been working?

Elvia Nebo: My name is Elvia Nebo, and I’ve been here for 15 years.

BM: Um, do you enjoy your job?

EN: I love my job. I truly, truly do.

BM: How did you get to the point you were at today?

EN: By following orders. By doing what I need to do and be respectful to others.

BM What are some people you looked up to during your journey?

EN: My mom. My mom was a very, very strong role model for me.

BM What were some struggles you had during your journey?

EN: In my teens.

BM: Yes.

EN: Um, I actually I did not find any struggles. The only struggle that I found, I made myself. But I was very lucky to have everything open for me.

BM: What is your biggest motivation in life?

EN: My kids and now my grandchildren.

BM: What is some advice you can give a kid?

EN:  A kid at school? To do your best every day.

BM: Okay?

EN: Nothing’s gonna come easy, and if you don’t sacrifice right now, like, this is the advice that I used to give my kids when they were in school. If you struggle now with school, you can enjoy later. But if you start enjoying now, then you’re gonna struggle a lot later. So focus, stay focused, and just do what you need to do now, and sacrifice what you need to do, so you can be better off later on.

BM: Do you like working with the kids?

EN: I love working with the kids. I really, really, truly do. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t be here for 15 years already. Becoming people’s grandmas.

BM: What is your favorite part about this job?

EN: I’m dealing with my kids. Almost. Uh, done with the students. Dealing with the students, that’s what keeps me going. Uh, I like to see, like, when my kids were in school, I like to see and think that this is what they went through. So I like to treat those kids the way I would have liked them to treat my kids.

BM: What motivated you to get this job?

EN:  Again, my kids, vacation time, I can spend, I would have the same vacation time as they would. Instead of getting a regular job and getting two weeks off, you know, once a year, it could not be with them. So every holiday, every chance that I got, and I get to see what teachers are going through with kids. You know, and having kids, that’s what motivated me. So I would be able to understand. The other side.

BM: What would you tell your, your past self.

EN: Not to waste time. Not to waste time, and, like, again, like, the previous advice is, do it right the first time, or try to do your best. You know, not everybody’s going to succeed in everything, but find what you love to do. Don’t go after money. Because money’s not gonna bring you happiness, and you find what you love to do, and stick to that. Okay.

BM Thank you, Ms. Elvia.

EN: You’re very welcome, my grandson.
