The Hate U Give provides a real life demonstration of what racism is

The Hate U Give is an emotional book of what it feels like to be a person of color accused by white people of being in gangs, doing drugs or dealing them, or committing crimes just for looking different from them. This was Angie Thomas’s first novel about a teenage girl (Starr) who grapples with racism, police brutality, and activism after witnessing her black friend (Khalil) murdered by a white police.

Just like another Angie Thomas novel, “On The Come Up,” these both have to do with with a 16 year old girl who fights for justice for her family. The thing is that in “The Hate U Give” Starr fights for justice for Khalil’s murder and her community against the white police man that murdered Khalil.  Starr has to deal with her racist friend for blaming a guy of something he didn’t do. But in “On The Come Up” Bri fights only for her family to get out of poverty by using her rapping skill to help her get money.

One thing that brought me closer to this book is that the theme of this book is racism. Racism has been going on for years and lots of people know it. In “The Hate U Give” Starr has to fight against the white police man who shot Khalil for supposedly having a weapon. Starr has to deal with her friend (Hailey) who betrayed her by not supporting her and for blaming Khalil of being a drug dealer because he was black.

I really liked this book because it is able to relate to so many people of color. This book was the best book of 2018 because it just talked about lots of topics that are supposed to be talked about that are tearing communities apart from each other. This book is for any type of audience who are looking for a book that has a powerful story behind it.
