The primary election for California governor will be held on June 2 and the general election will be held on November 3.
Current California Governor Gavin Newsom is term-limited and can’t run for office again. Democrats were unable to endorse a candidate, which leaves the race open-wide (highly competitive). After the primary election the two top candidates will move on to the general election.
In,”California 2026 poll: Swalwell takes lead in Governor primary, 25% undecided; election for LA Mayor wide open” it states “A new Emerson College Polling/Inside California Politics survey of the June primary for Governor finds Congressman Eric Swalwell leading the open primary with 17%, followed by Steve Hilton (13%), Tom Steyer (11%), Chad Bianco (11%), and Katie Porter (8%). A quarter of voters, 25%, are undecided.”
(D) Eric Swalwell leads the early race and (R) Steve Hilton is in second place, but who are these candidates and what are their stances on affordability, housing, and immigration?
(D) Eric Swalwell
In “Issues” by “Eric Swalwell for Governor” it states,”Eric also stands as a protector for our immigrant families, having voted to defund mass deportation efforts. He will work to unmask ICE and ensure that federal agents can no longer hide while terrorizing our communities.”
This shows Eric Swalwell is against ICE and will fight for immigrants in California, but what does he say he will he do about housing?
In “Issues” by “https://www.ericswalwell.com/issues” it states, “Eric’s approach is simple: affordability over red tape. On day one, Eric will declare a statewide housing emergency to bypass barriers and speed up construction where it is needed most.”
This shows Eric’s plan to cut red tape (regulations) to speed up housing to make housing affordable, but what’s his plan for affordability?
According to “https://www.ericswalwell.com/issues” it states, “His Main Street Tax Holiday will waive this tax for one year, allowing neighborhood shops to reinvest that capital immediately. He will cut corporate taxes for businesses that keep executive pay within a reasonable range of their median worker, encouraging companies to raise the floor for their entire workforce.”
Swalwell’s plan is to give tax cuts to small business for one year so they could use it to invest in their business. He also wants to introduce a law that lowers taxes for companies that lowers the pay of people at the top closer to the average worker.
(R) Steve Hilton
According to “stevehiltonforgovernor” it states,”Steve Hilton will introduce his plan to cut healthcare costs and wait times using savings from ending full Medi-Cal coverage for illegal immigrants and redirecting up to $20 billion a year to make healthcare more affordable and readily available for working Californians. Hilton will argue that Sacramento has put the wrong people first and that taxpayer dollars are intended to help citizens and legal residents before those who are here illegally.”
Hilton’s plan is to cut Medi-Cal for people that are undocumented and to put that money toward people that are documented and make healthcare cheaper for people that are documented, but what are his plans for housing?
According to “stevehiltonforgovenor” it states,“It’s time for a completely new approach. To provide Great Homes for Californians we need to directly tackle the main causes of the Housing Crisis: hidden housing taxes, anti-housing regulations, and anti-housing lawsuits.”
Hilton’s plan is to get rid of housing taxes and housing regulation. He also plans to stop housing law suits.
According to “Abc7” Hilton states “Everybody supports, I can’t imagine a single person who doesn’t support what’s done to close our southern border.”
This shows Steve Hilton supports closing the southern border (the border between the United States and Mexico) and shows that he supports Trump’s immigration policies.
These are the policies for the two top-polling candidates for governor.
Remember to vote in the primary June 2 and general election November 3.
