Are interesting themes in lessons a good idea?

Do students tend to pay more attention to lessons when there is a theme (Superheroes, Music, Cartoons, Sports, and etc) they like?

Teachers from Animo Jefferson Charter Middle School have given us their opinion on whether that’s true.

English teacher, Elizabeth Borum said, “ I think students are motivated when there is a theme they like, however, I am also suppose to teach what is required, but I would put themes in my lessons as much as possible.” Borum thinks that her students would want a theme on technology the most.”

Math teacher, Thomas Lo said, “Students are motivated when there are themes in lessons and I am willing to put themes in my lessons if it means that my students are learning.” “ Themes I would choose would be music, money, and basketball, but out of all of them my students would probably prefer music.”

Technology teacher, Tiffany Fang said, “ I think themes are good for students because it captures their interests and motivates them to want to learn more.” Fang has actually tried to put some themes in her lessons here and there and from her observations  it seems that those students were more engaged in the lessons.

From all the teachers point of view, students are more motivated when there are themes they like.
